We were planning on doing the walk that we
have done a few times before (see here,
here,
here,
here
and here)
but when we got to the Pass of Branda
we decided to do something else. We turned
left instead of right, and explored the Oruaiti Reserve. From the ridge there is a panoramic view southand across Breaker Bay.
The far point of the area was used by Maori as a pa site. Recently a memorial has been constructed.
We had our picture taken by the pouwhenua.
Although it was a beautiful day, and virtually windless, the seas were running high (of which more later) and producing some interesting patterns when viewed from the cliff top.
The Arahura hit the swell as it ventured out into Cook Strait. The 31 year old Interisland ferry is due to retire shortly. I remember when it arrived in Wellington all brand spanking new and we were allowed a pre-service inspection. This was in the days when the ferries were purpose built for the job. Arahura was the last such boat - subsequent ones have been picked up second hand after many years service in Europe.
Looking across to Pencarrow Head and it's two lighthouses.
These two shots give an idea of the swells running in from the ocean.
We had planned to walk back along the beach but thought it might be a bit risky.
When we got home I discovered that the seas had got worse and there was some concern for travellers along the southern coast.

Just as well you didn't do the beach walk - looks scary!! Gorgeous views though, and so sunny!
