Botanic Gardens

Today we went for a gentle stroll through the Wellington Botanic Gardens which start at the bottom of our street. Photographs courtesy of Dave Firth and the anonymous bystander who took this one of the group of us in the summer house by the duck pond.

The spring flowers are coming on nicely

and the garden is waking up after the winter rest,

There are a number of scultures dotted around the park including a Henry Moore work

and the Rudderstone which has an interesting see through effect caused by reflections.

Te Kopahou

Te Kopahou is a reserve bordering the south coast and extending in to the borders of the Karori Wildlife Sanctuary. We started from the Brooklyn Wind Turbine, walked past the radome (sorry - don't have a better link) at Hawkins Hill and descended down the Te Kopahou/Bunker Track. Here are a couple of shots from Ali's cell phone camera. First the view back over Wellington from Hawkins Hill. This is looking over Owhiro Bay from the top of the cliffs.
At the bottom of the track, where it joins the coast line, we met Dave and Jane. Dave had just got back from Indonesia and had a camera. So the remaining photos are thanks to him. This is the group with the track in the background.
From here is a short walk round to Sinclair Head which is a haul out colony for New Zealand Fur Seals like this youngster sunning himself on a rock and this older one trying to have an after lunch snooze
This fellow was obviously applauding our walking efforts
while all his mates were singularly unimpressed.

Otari

For pictures from today's walk you will have to look at Nico's blog. We walked in from Otari Reserve and climbed up the side of the valley onto part of the Skyline Walk. This is a section of the Wellington Town Belt which was established in the early days of settlement. The weather was pleasant. As Nico mentioned we had gales yesterday but today it was almost completely calm.

Dunedin hijinks

Well, here it is, as promised, the first blog from the deeeeep South and boy is it a long and photo-licious one! Have become thoroughly bored of reading Freudian analysis of Gothic novels, so decided this was a valid way to procrastinate. The first nearly-five weeks of this semester have been busy ones for me, due in most part to my atrocious organisational skills, resulting in my having to pick up a paper two weeks in which I'd somehow misplaced between enrolling at the start of the year and now. Normally I'd not bother, but it's prerequisite for entrance to the Bar, so kinda important. Aaanyway, that leaves me with four Law papers and one English paper, which is keeping me _very_ busy and stressed but it's all for the good as in only a few short months I will, touch wood, have a law degree! However, as Nico can tell you and I'm sure you all know, Dunedin's famous for its, er, extra-curricular activities, so I'm posting some pictures from the parties we've had in the last 2 weekends. The first set are from my delayed Sweet 16th (I refused to turn 23 - blame Blink 182...) which had a theme of 90s pop tarts. First photo: boys being N*Sync. Of course, a 90s party has to have 90s music and they got so excited when Bye Bye Bye came on that they spontaneously burst into semi-co-ordinated dance! They all dressed up in matching blue tops, jeans and novelty bling! So sweet... L-R is Thom, Cam, Si and Dan.
The next one is some of the girlies - left to right is: Briar as Ginger Spice flirting with one of the N*Sync boys (actually her boyfriend Thom, so tragically no gossip), Kate as Posh Spice feeling the emotion of the song and me as Baby Spice dancing like a muppet as usual. In other non-celebrity gossip, Posh was later seen deep in conversation with 'generic poptart' JK, as the picture below shows. Bystanders confirm that the two were animtedly discussing the seventh Harry Potter book, which had come out the weekend before. Yeah, we're geeks.

Scary Spice showed up late, having been at a 21st for the first part of the party. Shocking. However, Sporty Spice didn't show up at all, as her character was deemed by all attending 'too boring' to bother dressing up as. Fo' shame, people. Anyway, here's Scary:
Moving swiftly along, we come to last weekend and Gemma (aka Scary Spice)'s 21st. Her theme was 'classy and sophisticated', though it was held at her flat (next door to us), there was a keg and her cake was made up to look like 80s cartoon superstar Jem (of Jem and the Holograms fame, doncha know), courtesy of our lovely and talented flatmate Sean. I guess words like 'sophisticated' mean different things to different people. :p Cake:
Gemma with traditional novelty over-sized drinking vessel, a wine glass (or bucket - it was half the size of her face as you may be able to see in this strangely small photo - blame the net) in her case and her lovely cousin and my lovely flatmate Amy (who dressed up as Britney Spears (spelling?) for the 90s party but avoided being in photos by taking them all herself) :Never say we're not responsible drinkers, however - look at the food laid on for us by the lovely hippies she lives with:
The hippie girls, looking gorgeous:

Gemma, her winejug and her mum during the speeches:
... her mum wrote a song! Was very cute. We all sang along:
But it made KateKate and I nervous about our speech which, due to the chronic disorganisation which we both suffer from, we didn't have time to print it off my laptop, so we're studying it intently and not at all posed-ly here:

And then everyone danced lots, as is our wont, doing our 'signature moves' or what would shortly become them (photo 1 - KateKate, signature move - twirl surrounded by boys, photo 2 - Jen and Amber, signature move - the side shimmy, oh yeah):
... singing loudly to our favourite songs (photo 1 - Gem, Delder and Sisi with random in background, probably singing Mr Brightside by the Killers, photo 2 - Kenny (partially obscured due to excessive happiness), Blair and Aidy singing something emotional yet masculine, photo 3 - Gem and Sisi again, probably singing Mr Brightside again/still): ... and having yell-y though perfectly amicable conversations over the din:

Obligatory nice flat photo ("Hot Amy" the Orr-stray-yun, me, Sean - cakemaker extraordinaire and Amber, super-librarian and all round lovely gorgeous person):
Right, I think I've wasted enough of your bandwidth and mine for now, so it's off to bed for me and probably dreaming of fainting heroines, mysterious apparitions and sinister black veils... and then realising they're all just metaphors for the subjugation of the feminine domestic by the masculine political/public. Mmm. Right, hope this loads.
Love to all,
Jen.
P.S, If anyone's bored at work and can access youtube look up Boburnham (screenname) - he's only a wee thing but quite hysterical, especially his song "My Whole Fmaily Thinks I'm Gay" (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=LZoO8LyizLA&NR=1). I feel I should warn you it may be a little crass, but you probably got that from the title.

Eastern Walkway

Today's walk was the Eastern Walkway. We had a glorious sunny and warm day in complete contrast to yesterday which was dull, overcast and very wet in the evening. Noreen has taken off for Europe so I am cameraless but here are photos courtesy of Dave and Jane.

Four old codgers sitting on a bench. Note the Kaikouras in the far distance.

The view looking back along the track across the entrance to Wellington harbour.

The track goes along the ridge and then we walked back along the shore.
This is the Ataturk memorial. A little piece of Turkey to commemorate the Gallipoli campaign.

Barrett's Reef, where the Wahine went down.
