Kaitoke

One of our favourite walking destinations but I can only find one previous post - part of my 60th birthday celebrations. This blog will be primarily about trees but we did discover this fine specimen of a New Zealand earthworm.
We were dwarfed by these giants soaring into the sky.
An ent-like tree.
The river is crossed by a well protected swing bridge
with good views from the middle.

This track follows the river
which has some good swimming holes.
On a flat area near the camp site is a grove of totara planted in memory of Norman Kirk the Labour prime minister who died in office in 1974.
After a not-so-strenuous walk we repaired to a nearby cafe which specialises in cream teas and enjoyed date scones, blackberry jam, cream and orange pekoe tea. I left my camera in the car so there are no photographs of the gluttony that ensued!
