Mid-Winter Cheer

Since we arrived in New Zealand it has seemed strange that the seasons are reversed with respect to the calendar. In 1976 few people celebrated in the cold dark days of winter. We decided we needed to, so started a tradition of Christmas style dinners at mid winter. The Morris picked up on this and hold an annual Not The Christmas Dinner. Our friend Jenny (not to be confused with daughter Jenny) has a birthday at the end of December so often misses out on celebrating it then. Noreen suggested she have a mid winter event to compensate which she duly did. There was a wonderful pot luck dinner finished off by Christmas pudding flamed with brandy.
Although it has been cool we have escaped serious bad weather so far. There is a big frontal system crossing the Tasman which will bring cold, gales and rain later in the week. In the meantime there is plenty of colour and signs of new growth in the garden. These are daffodils pushing upand polyanthus seem to be in flower most of the year.
We have a selection of geraniums (although, confusingly, Wikipædia thinks they might be pelargoniums) which are doing well and preparing for another stunning display.
