Makara

Another of our all-time favourite walks, from Makara beach up to the gun emplacements overlooking Cook Strait.
Seaside cottages are called baches around here. Here are some at the foot of cliffs on the shore of Ohariu Bay. Mana Island is sticking out to the left of the headland.
It was a windy day.
The beach is very stony, my size 11s give the scale.
The path goes up the ridge of a cliff. The South Island in the background.
A closer look at Project West Wind than we had a couple of weeks ago.
From the top, one of the gun bunkers and the view across the Strait to the South Island.
A startled sheep trying to work out which way to run.
Looking across to Mana with Kapiti behind it.
Ohariu Bay from high on the cliff. The baches are roughly in the centre, just right of the small headland.
Dave beat us down and waited in the sheltered lee of the hill for chocolate and scroggin.
