Friday was Halloween. New Zealand has adopted the American practice of children dressing up and going round houses and being rewarded with sweets and lollies. I can’t say I approve but our children loved it when they were small and so I suppose I am just being a Grumpy Old Bugger (and I’m proud of it!). Anyway, Jen entered into the spirit of the thing, dressing up as a scary witch.
One of the more imaginative visitors topically played on the fact that we are in the middle of a general election campaign. He dressed up as the truly scary John Key, leader of the National Party. We will not be voting for him.
The election is next Saturday. It’s not clear which way the outcome will go. After nine years in power the Labour led coalition are looking a bit tired but the alternatives are not encouraging. National would likely lead a right leaning coalition with various unreconstructed free marketeers and big business associates. I just hope the Greens increase their share of the vote. (We have a proportional representation system where the final composition of parliament is determined by the percentage of votes that each party gets.)
